An ingrown toenail, or onychocryptosis, is a painful nail condition that occurs when a spike of nail rubs against, or penetrates, the skin that sits alongside the nail. It can be debilitating; and if left untreated can become infected and form growths called hypergranulation tissue.

Podiatrists specialise in the treatment of ingrown toenails. You can trust the Podiatrists at Evolve Podiatry Bendigo will treat your painful condition with the gentle care it requires. We offer a range of conservative and surgical management options for painful ingrown toenails.

Often your problem can be resolved with one simple, and gentle treatment, however if it is a tricky case, we may encourage more frequent visits until resolved. For anyone who is beyond this type of treatment and surgery is essential, we are also excited to now have in clinic the Exocool™ device to reduce the discomfort of having an injection administered into the toe or foot.

Most involuted nails start off growing straight at proximal end of the nail (maxtrix) and as the nail grows distally the nail begins to curl resulting in involution.

BraceNFix™ How it works

BraceNFix™ braces the proximal nail as the nail grows distally supporting the nail and preventing the nail from curling. Additionally when it is cured/or hardened, it causes the nail to contract slightly, resulting in internal tension which helps further to re-align the nail growth. If you have any other questions, please book an appointment, and our friendly Podiatrist will discuss BraceNFix with you further.

If you have an unsightly nail that is damaged or destroyed, or are receiving treatment for fungal nails and want it to look better right now… fear not… We have a treatment especially for you!

Introduction the revolutionary nail restoration system KeryFlex™. KeryFlex™ works using a flexible resin that helps encourage strength and healthy nail growth in severely damaged and fungal nails.

Nail Restoration Podiatry {suburb}

Acrylic nails are rigid and do not bend with the natural movement of the toes. As a result, acrylic nails applied to the toenails can cause micro-trauma to the nail bed. Acrylic nails are also applied using strong acids which irritate the nail bed and damage the existing nail.

KeryFlex™ is flexible, yet durable, and designed specifically for the toes. It’s free from harsh acids, it is non-porous and will not allow moisture to permeate between the natural nail and prosthetic. KeryFlex™ uses medical grade resin and is impregnated with the hydroypridone antifungal ingredient Piroctone.

No. KeryFlex™ Nail Restoration is available exclusively through properly trained Podiatrists and is always applied in the sanitary setting of a Podiatry clinic.

Unfortunately, no. KeryFlex™ does not bind to the skin and therefore needs a recommended 15% minimum of the natural nail length to be present. Please book an assessment appointment and our friendly Podiatrist will advise if treatment is not possible.

A KeryFlex™ nail is unaffected by acetone, nail polishes or detergents. Nail polish can be applied immediately after the KeryFlex™ nail has been completed. Please note, we will not be able to apply the polish for you.

KeryFlex™ is not an antifungal treatment. If you have a fungal nail, it is recommended you are also doing an antifungal treatment. Oral treatments and topical treatments around the cuticle area can be used. As the KeryFlex™ nail is non-porous and impermeable, treatments onto or underneath the nail are not recommended. Please discuss suitable antifungal treatments with our friendly Podiatrist.

No. Trimming is not recommended; however, you are encouraged to regularly file and shape the nail as the healthy natural nail pushes the KeryFlex™ nail forward. Doing so will reduce the risk of the KeryFlex™ nail coming off.

If you wish to have your KeryFlex™ nail removed, please make an appointment (if you do not already have one) and your Podiatrist will use their specialist tools to remove the KeryFlex™ nail.

We recommend reapplication every 6-8 weeks, depending on the speed of growth of your natural nail. This may also be impacted by any activities you do that cause excessive stresses on the nails (eg. long distance running). Treatment is recommended until the natural nail is fully gown out and you are happy with its appearance.

If you have any other questions, please book an appointment and our friendly Podiatrist will discuss KeryFlex™ with you further.

What to expect during your general treatment appointment.

Comfort

Our Podiatry room provides a modern, comfortable chair (weighted to 240kg load capacity) and can be adjusted to provide superior comfort for your physical positional needs.

Assessment

A history of your concern area will be taken; a thorough assessment of the whole foot (and lower limb if applicable) will be undertaken. We consider all potential causes of your concern and will take this into consideration whilst we treat your feet.

Treatment

Your skin will be cleansed prior to commencing treatment using hypoallergenic cleanser. Nails will be gently trimmed – we use a gentle technique to reduce discomfort, particularly on longer or highly curved nails. Specialist tools will be used to gently remove and thoroughly clear any debris, hard skin or corn tissue that build up in the edge of the nails (sulci). A specialist file, with variable coarseness will be used to smooth and shape the nail and skin surrounding the nails.

All corns and callus will be gently and effectively removed from the tops and tips of the toes; from the interdigital space and web space; and from the forefoot and heels. The skin will then be beautifully smoothed to remove any rough patches of skin – no more catching on the bedsheets! We will then finish with a final cleanse and provide a beautiful firm or gentle massage to the feet, using our specialist foot creams to leave your feet feeling soft and smooth.

Ongoing Care

Often review appointments are recommend, however we always want your feet to feel comfortable for as long as possible after having treatment. We will always make recommendations on things you can do at hoe to get the most out of your Podiatry appointment.
