What Are Orthotics and Why Might You Need Them?

Foot orthotics, also known as shoe inserts or insoles, are devices that provide support, cushioning, and stability to the feet. They are prescribed by Podiatrists, to address various musculoskeletal conditions with the aim of improving foot biomechanics and redistributing pressure.

These specially crafted inserts are placed inside the shoes and work to correct or alleviate biomechanical abnormalities, such as excessive pronation (inward rolling of the foot), supination (outward rolling of the foot), or flat feet. By promoting the correct alignment and distributing forces evenly, foot orthotics may help improve foot function, reduce pain such as heel pain, and prevent or manage a range of foot and lower limb conditions.

Foot orthotics are beneficial in several ways. Firstly, they are mobility aids that provide support to the arches of the feet, reducing strain on the ligaments and muscles and improving overall foot structure. Secondly, they help to distribute pressure more evenly across the feet, which can alleviate discomfort and prevent the formation of painful pressure points. Additionally, foot orthotics may improve biomechanical alignment, reducing excessive stress on the ankles, knees, hips, and lower back. By promoting better alignment, they may help alleviate pain and discomfort in these areas.

Some common conditions that can benefit from foot orthotics include plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, shin splints, metatarsalgia, and knee, hip, and lower back pain. However, it’s important to note that foot orthotics should always be prescribed and fitted by a healthcare professional to ensure proper customisation and effectiveness for each individual’s specific needs.

Your Custom Orthotics Questions Answered

How long do custom orthotics last?

The lifespan of your orthotics can vary depending on factors such as usage, activity level, and maintenance.

On average, off the shelf orthotics will last 6-18 months, semi-custom orthotics 2-5 years and custom made orthotics 5-10 years. Semi-custom and fully-custom orthotics may benefit from recovering every 1-3 years to prolong the life of the device.
It is important to note that this is an estimate and individual experiences may vary.

Regularly inspecting your orthotics for signs of wear and tear and following the care instructions provided by your podiatrist will help prolong their lifespan. Additionally, it’s recommended to have periodic check-ups with your podiatrist to ensure that your orthotics are still providing the necessary support and functionality.

Can orthotics be worn with any kind of shoe?

Yes, typically orthotics can be worn with a variety of shoe types. There are however some exceptions to the rules, or a second pair of orthotics may be recommended for certain styles of shoes.

Custom orthotics are designed to be versatile and can be used with athletic shoes, casual footwear, low heeled dress shoes, and even certain types of sandals or open-toed shoes. However, the compatibility of orthotics with specific shoe styles may vary based on the design of the orthotics and the shoe’s construction.

It’s always best to consult with your podiatrist to ensure proper fit and compatibility with the shoes you intend to wear so they can provide guidance and recommendations specific to your needs.

How long does it take to get used to wearing orthotics?

The adjustment period for wearing orthotics can vary from person to person.

Some people may adapt to wearing orthotics within a few days, while others may require a few weeks or even longer. During the initial period, you may experience some discomfort or changes in gait as your feet and muscles adjust to the new support and alignment provided by the orthotics. Gradually increasing the amount of time you wear them each day and following any specific instructions from your podiatrist may help ease the transition.

If persistent discomfort or concerns arise, it’s important to consult with your podiatrist for further guidance and adjustments to ensure optimal fit and comfort.
